UK Drive: Porsche’s lighter 911 Carrera T aims to capture some of the GT3’s sparkle

What is it? You’ve likely heard of the Porsche 911 GT3, right? The stripped-out, ultra-focused version of Porsche’s already capable 911? Accompanied by a price in excess of £100,000 (as well as waiting list stretching far into the future), it’s a car few will ever be able to purchase. So Porsche has applied the same measures to its base 911 Carrera to create this – the Carrera T. It’s lighter and more exclusive than Porsche’s entry-level 911, but costs close to £25,000 less than the range-topping GT3.

What is it? It’s a pretty special moment whenever Porsche introduces any new car, but a new RS model? Well that’s even more of an occasion. It brings us to this – the new 911 GT3 RS. It’s a harder, stiffer and more track-focused version of the already very capable 911 GT3 designed to handle every corner you throw at it. It’s already proving incredible successful – Porsche simply cannot build enough to meet demand – but we’ve managed to get some time behind the wheel to see what all the fuss is about.

The five best Porsches that aren’t 911s

When many people think of Porsche, they think of the 911. It’s undoubtedly the most famous and iconic model that Porsche makes, and has been around for over 50 years. However, people often forget about the rest of the Porsche range that, while exceptionally good, seem to forever be in the 911’s shadow. So with that in mind, here are the best Porsches (that aren’t 911s).

First drive: The Porsche 718 Cayman GTS gets better the harder you drive it

What is it? The 718 Cayman GTS is designed to be the sharpest version of Porsche’s baby two-door available. Thanks to a small hike in power coming alongside a range of chassis tweaks and mechanical upgrades, the GTS should be one of the most capable compact sports cars on sale today. The regular Cayman’s controversial 2.5-litre flat four-cylinder remains, and though many Porsche purists continue to baulk at the powertrain’s existence, the Stuttgart manufacturer is sticking with it – whether it’s liked or not.
