RING legend Sugar Ray Leonard today backed Floyd Mayweather Jnr to triumph in boxing’s richest ever fight.
Undefeated Mayweather will face Manny Pacquiao at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas on Saturday, May 2 in one of the sport’s most anticipated fights.
Talking to the Evening Express from his California base, five-weight world champ Leonard gave his verdict on the 160 million welterweight bout between two of this generation’s best pound for pound fighters.
And the 58-year-old, who will be in Aberdeen later this month, insisted Mayweather-Pacquiao is as big as his legendary ‘no mas’ 1980 showdown with Roberto Duran.
Leonard said: “I give the edge to Mayweather because he hasn’t tasted a defeat in his career.
“The Mayweather-Pacquiao fight has already come close in size to the one between myself and Roberto Duran due to the global anticipation.”
Leonard aims to now inspire rising Granite City boxers when he appears at the Hilton Treetops Hotel on Saturday, March 14.For more on this story and details of his appearance in Aberdeen, pick up a copy of today’s Evening Express.
