South Africa’s deputy president has said he anticipates a “speedy resolution” to his talks with President Jacob Zuma about a power transition.

Cyril Ramaphosa, who is expected to replace the scandal-tainted Mr Zuma, acknowledged “a lot of speculation and anxiety” about the status of the president, and said South Africa is undergoing a challenging time.

Mr Ramaphosa said he is talking to Mr Zuma about “the transition and matters relating to his position as the President of the Republic”.

The deputy president, who is the leader of the ruling African National Congress, said he expects that he and Mr Zuma will report to the party and the country in the coming days.
