Prosecutors leading the investigation into a far-right demonstration in Chemnitz say there is no evidence that a video showing protesters chasing and attacking a foreigner is fake.
Dresden prosecutor Wolfgang Klein told Die Zeit newspaper his office believes the video is genuine and is evidence in his office’s investigation.
The comments came as pressure grows for Chancellor Angela Merkel’s domestic intelligence chief Hans-Georg Maassen to explain comments he made to Bild newspaper suggesting the video may have been shot elsewhere or at another time.
Die Zeit reported it examined the clip, and video shot shortly before on the mobile phone on which it was filmed, and confirmed it was from the August 26 protest.
Legislator Patrick Sensburg, Mrs Merkel’s party’s intelligence expert, is calling for Mr Maassen to explain his evaluation to parliament.
