OVER the years I’ve found if you’re looking for something a wee bit different for Christmas it’s worth heading out of town.
Which is how we came to be in Morgan McVeigh’s on a dreich lunchtime when the magic words “Cullen Skink” on the menu caught my eye.
What better way to banish the winter blues? My sister a fellow skink fan was as delighted as I was when the massive steaming bowls (4.50 each) arrived, accompanied by a crunchy bread roll.
The soup was thick, creamy and packed with full-on-flavour smoked haddock and chunks of potato.
It was delicious. If I hadn’t been in a busy restaurant I’d have licked my bowl clean. My husband had opted for macaroni cheese and chips (7.50). Again this was mac and cheese as it should be
big plump tubes of pasta smothered in rich cheesy sauce.
However, the slightly greasy chips were a bit of a let-down, more akin to the fast-food restaurant version. We had ordered tea for three (5.25) with the hope of having some of the mouth-watering home bakes and cakes on offer. But we were full up. Still, there’s quite a few shopping days left until Christmas we’ll definitely be back.
