Game Of Thrones creators David Benioff and DB Weiss are to write and produce a new series of Star Wars films.

The writing partners will work on a number of films separate from both the current Skywalker episodic saga and The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson’s trilogy, Lucasfilm announced on Tuesday.

Benioff and Weiss are preparing to move on from Game Of Thrones once the long-awaited final series airs in 2019 and had been developing a controversial HBO series called Confederate.

The pair said they had been “dreaming” of Star Wars ever since the first film was released in 1977.

“We are honoured by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game Of Thrones is complete,” they added in a joint statement.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said: “David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today.

“Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

Confederate was billed as depicting an alternate ending to the American Civil war where slavery remained legal.

No release dates have been set for the new Star Wars films.
