Hannah Miley’s Olympics have come to an end after Great Britain failed to progress in the relay.
Team GB finished with a time of 7:54.17 minutes, only enough for fourth in their heat.
And despite the best efforts of the Inverurie swimming star, it was only the ninth-fastest time.
With only eight spots for grabs, it was another agonising miss for Miley.
The United States and China romped clear of the rest of the field, as the Americans won the heat with a time of 7:47.77 minutes.
But a strong second half from Hungary saw them grab the final automatic qualifying spot in third place.
Great Britain had to beat Sweden’s mark of 7:53.43 minutes but missed out by less than a second.
The result means Miley will have to wait until Tokyo 2020 if she wants to win an elusive Olympic medal.
Australia won the other heat with a time of 7:49.24 minutes, beating Russia and Canada.
The final takes place at 3.55am.
