
Byron Boxing’s John Docherty has been named as one of three finalists for the Young Athlete of the Year at the 2016 Team Scotland Scottish Sports Awards.
The 18-year-old is in contention for the Peter Heatly Trophy which will be presented at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre on September 28.
Docherty is part of the Team GB Podium potential programme, aimed at athletes who are viewed as medal prospects at major games such as the Commonwealth and Olympics.
The Scottish international won gold at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa and silver at the European Youth Championships.
Docherty then announced his arrival at senior level by taking the Scottish title, silver at the British Championships and gold at elite international level in Belgrade.
Swimmer Kathleen Dawson and para-sport sprinter Maria Lyle are the other two athletes in the running to take the prestigious award.
