Portlethen’s Clark Brechin will face Mark Thomson, of Kintore, in Sunday’s Evening Express Champion of Champions scratch final at Deeside.

Plus-two handicapper Clark defeated Calvin Cheyne by 5&4 in their semi-final at Newmachar.

Clark, 36, was beaten 5&3 in the 2013 final at Craibstone by Portlethen clubmate Keith Horne after qualifying for the tournament by winning the North-east District Championship the previous year.

However, Clark, who broke his own record by winning the Portlethen club championship for an eighth time this season, said: “It would be great to go all the way this time.

“I’m very excited about playing in the final, and Deeside is a course I enjoy playing.

“Mark has already beaten two North-east district players to reach the final so I’m expecting a very tough match

“I’ve reached the final once before but suffered a nasty accident two weeks prior which affected my performance.

“It is great to emulate that feat again this year but, hopefully, with a more favourable outcome.”

Clark, who is a buyer for an oil company, won the first two holes against Calvin with a par and a birdie.

The third was halved in pars before Clark played a superb shot to win the fourth.

Clark added: “I hit a nine iron stone dead to go three holes up.

“Calvin won the next with a par but further birdies at the sixth and seventh gave me a four-hole advantage. Calvin hit back to win the eighth, with a birdie, and the par three ninth to reduce my lead to two holes at the turn.

“The 10th and 11th were halved in pars before I won the 12th, 13th and 14th with pars to close the match out.”

Mark sealed his spot in Sunday’s final by beating Barrie Edmond, of Bon Accord, by 3&2.

The handicap final will be between Hazlehead’s Michael Angus, who plays off nine, and eight-handicapper Calum May, of Insch.
