Commonwealth Games wrestler Viorel Etko triumphed in his final competition before heading Down Under in April.

The Oldmeldrum athlete, 40, who recently returned from a training camp in Romania, defended his title in the English Senior Wrestling Championships 61kg category.

Team Scotland’s Etko will head for Gold Coast as the current Commonwealth bronze medal-holder at 57kg, with the weight classifications altered since his win at Glasgow 2014.

It will be his third, and last, Games.

Of the English Championships win, Etko said: “This is my last major competition before departing for Australia and the Team Scotland training camps.

“It felt really good to claim gold again in Salford and it was particularly inspiring to be a part of an incredibly successful event for ETKO Wrestling Academy. I am very proud of what the club as a whole has achieved.

“Results like these really put Scotland on the map at major wrestling events. The English Wrestling Championships attract a strong field, with representatives across a number of nations.

“It is a genuine pleasure to see our club members perform so well at this level and I am delighted that wrestling – among both juniors and seniors – continues to experience increasing interest in the North-east.”

ETKO Wrestling Academy, also based in Oldmeldrum, also saw Nico Cojocaru triumph in the 70kg category and Ianic Sacultan win at 79kg.
