Aberdeen AAC’s Naomi Lang aims to add another honour to her growing collection when she competes in the Scottish 3,000m Championships at Glasgow’s Scotstoun stadium tomorrow evening.
The Edinburgh University sports science student won the national indoor under-20 title over this distance in January and last summer she won the Scottish senior women’s 5,000m gold.
Lang is currently showing outstanding form and it would be no surprise if she won again.
Last weekend she knocked almost eight seconds off her previous best 1,500m time with an outstanding victory in a British Milers Club race at Watford.
Her time of 4min 20.92secs leaves her within four seconds of the qualifying mark required for a place on the Great Britain team for this summer’s world junior championships in Finland.
She said: “At the start of the season I didn’t think I’d be anywhere near the qualifying standard so I haven’t really thought about the world championships.
“At Watford I was aiming to get under 4:25 but I was surprised to be so far below that so I was very happy.
“I’ll go to the English Championships next month and try to run well and see what happens after that.
“Hopefully I can run another fast time there.”
Earlier this month Lang scored a notable double at the Scottish East District championships, winning the 800m in a personal best 2:12.12 and taking the 1,500m crown in 4:32.64.
The only disappointment she has suffered this summer came in the British Universities and Colleges Championships at Bedford.
The former Aberdeen Grammar pupil looked to be in control of the race and heading for a fast time as the leading group went through the bell, but with 300m to go she tripped and fell.
By the time she gathered herself together the leaders were out of reach but she bravely carried on to finish in 10th position.
She said: “I’m not sure exactly what happened.
“I tripped as another girl came alongside me.
“It all happened so fast but it was really disappointing as I felt I was having a good run.”
Lang has bounced back superbly from that setback and looks to be heading towards more successes in the weeks ahead.
