Aberdeen U13 boys have won the Scottish Boys Team title at the Inter-League (Team) Table Tennis Championships for the sixth year in a row.
Louis Loi (Turriff Academy), Daniel Tibbetts (Arduthie Primary) and Dylan Thies (Aberdeen Grammar) beat Edinburgh 3-2 in a tight match as part of a successful weekend for the city’s teams.
All the Scottish regions took part in the tournament and the youths of the Aberdeen Sports Village (ASV) Table Tennis Academy – which formed all of the Granite City’s squad – shone across the age categories.
Just before the U13 boys’ success, Isla Stott (St Margaret’s School) and Tessa Yau (Albyn School) dominated the U18 girls event, dropping just one set on course to the title.
In the U15 boys, Rafal Wilowski (Banchory Academy), Yifei Fang (Robert Gordon’s School) and Josef Bokedal (Aberdeen Grammar), triumphed, beating the West of Scotland team 3-2 in the final.
There were also good displays from Aberdeen’s U13 girls and U18 boys, both silver medallists after a solid weekend.
Hania Petryk (Sunnybank) and Willow Shek (Greenbrae School) lost out to the West of Scotland in the final, and the same happened to Andrew McRae (Westhill Academy) and Elias Bokedal (Aberdeen Grammar), outscored 3-2 by their Edinburgh rivals.
“Clearly it was another successful weekend of table tennis for the ASV Academy players, taking three titles and two silvers from a total of five juniors teams,” said Donald Pirie, the ASV Table Tennis Academy manager.
“Without doubt Aberdeen were the most successful age category team across the weekend,” he added.
The season is not over yet for ASV’s players, as the Scottish National Championships will take place on April 28 and 29 after being postponed in early March due to weather conditions.
Pirie said: “We will be looking for the ASV Academy players to take a few Scottish titles to end the season on a high.”
