We need self-belief for battle with Berwick, says Peterhead boss Jim

Peterhead's Mason Robertson.

Peterhead boss Jim McInally is looking for an increase in confidence when his side meet Berwick Rangers at Balmoor tomorrow.

The Blue Toon, who are six points behind leaders Montrose with two games in hand, dropped points against Edinburgh City at Ainslie Park last week.

The match ended in a 0-0 draw, despite several good chances for the Buchan side to win the game.

McInally wants to see his team back to their free-scoring best.

He said: “It’s a home game and we need to start finding the net again.

“We’re just looking to be a bit more clinical.

“Our goalscoring record has been phenomenal this year, but the goals have just dried up a bit in the last couple of games, so we just need to get back to it again.

“First and foremost it’s about winning.

“Berwick beat us the last time in Peterhead, so they come up with that in their locker.

“But we’re just in a position where there’s nearly a third of the season left, where we just need to win games.

“It doesn’t matter how you win them now, it’s just about winning.

“We played better in a couple of our losses recently than we did the night we beat Berwick.

“Anyone who was at those games would say that, but if you look from the outside in, people don’t care – they just want to see you winning.”

The boss senses his team aren’t brimming with confidence in the way they were earlier in the campaign.

He said: “It would be good if we could get back to playing the way we were.

“But we need to get the confidence back up again.

“When we were hot we were flying and it was sky high.

“I’m not saying our confidence is gone, it’s just not as high as it was, because you lose a couple of games and go from thinking your are invincible to being a bit more vulnerable.”

Peterhead’s hard-fought 3-2 win in Berwick two weeks ago came after the Borderers took all three points in a 2-0 win at Balmoor in September.

McInally said: “They’re a big side, they’ll cause us problems from set- pieces.

“They had three guys suspended and three or four injuries last week, so they’ll change their team.

“In the last game at Peterhead they sat in against us and then scored from a free-kick late in the game, then caught us with a counter-attack in the last minute.

“We know what to expect.”

Jamie Stevenson will miss out through injury, while Willie Gibson is suspended.

However, Mason Robertson could return for the Blue Toon.
