Highland: Ex-Aberdeen defender MacPherson’s journey from Peru to Pitmedden with Formartine United

Formartine United player-manager Paul Lawson is delighted to have signed Joseph MacPherson and extended the contract of Graeme Rodger.

Former Aberdeen defender MacPherson has penned a two-year deal at North Lodge Park after impressing as a trialist in pre-season.

Midfielder Rodger has signed a two-year extension to the remaining year left on his contract.

MacPherson, who was released by the Dons at the end of last season, was born in Peru and lived there until the age of seven.

Last year he also trained with the national team as part of a training camp with Peru’s under-18 squad.

Lawson said: “I watched him when he was at Aberdeen when he was younger and he played in Jevan Anderson’s team.

“When Aberdeen let him go at the end of the season we spoke to him and he was unsure of what he wanted to do. We invited him to pre-season to keep him fit and see how he got on.

“He settled into the group really well and did really well throughout pre-season.

“He’s friendly with Jevan and he saw how much he enjoyed it and came on last year. Playing alongside Craig McKeown was a massive help for Jevan.

“Joe saw that right from the start and he can add something to us so it’s a good fit for both parties. It was key we got Graeme tied up because he has been a fundamental part of what we achieved last year.”
