Smith leaves Cove Rangers as MacRae arrives

Cove Rangers have announced attacker Jonny Smith’s departure from the club.

Smith, 29, who provided an outrageous flicked assist against Spartans in the Highland League champions’ ultimately unsuccessful League Two play-off run last term, is understood to want more game time.

A club statement said: “We have agreed a deal with Inverurie Locos for his permanent transfer and the deal is currently being finalised.

“We’d like to personally thank Jonny for his contribution at Cove and wish him all the best for the future.”

Ex-Peterhead player Smith, who joined Cove from Keith in 2013, tweeted: “A really hard decision for me to make as I have really enjoyed my time with Cove Rangers but I have made a selfish decision to look after what I think is best for my family, myself and my football. I look forward to my next challenge.”

Meanwhile, Cove have brought in 19-year-old attacker Jordan MacRae from Nairn County on a three-year deal.

The Granite City club said they were “absolutely delighted” to get MacRae and added in a statement: “We’ve been tracking Jordan’s progress for a considerable amount of time and having persisted, we are pleased to have beaten the competition to his signature.

“He scored 23 goals in 38 starts last season – a very respectable and impressive record.

“Jordan will certainly enhance our forward play and complement the attacking players already at the club.

“We wish him all the very best as he embarks on his Cove Rangers career.”
