Cove Rangers boss John Sheran praised hat-trick hero Jordan MacRae as they beat Aberdeen University 3-1 in the Aberdeenshire Shield.

The striker netted all three as the Highland League champions won the first round tie at Keith Park.

MacRae got two before half time and netted a penalty in the second period.

Sam Toufique got a late consolation for the university, who also had Sam McLaren sent off.

Sheran said: “It was two good moves for the first two goals and good finishes from Jordan.

“It’s what he’s shown he is capable of for the last wee while.

“Then he tucked away the penalty for the third.

“We did enough for the whole night to get through.

“It was just about making sure we got the win and that nobody picked up any injuries, that was the case, so we’re pleased.”
