Football’s governing body Fifa has pushed through plans to expand the World Cup to 48 teams.
The change will come into effect from the 2026 World Cup after the decision was unanimously approved.
The controversial plans will see the competition split into 16 groups of three teams.
But all 211 member countries backed the proposals in Zurich earlier today.
The plan was one of new Fifa president Gianni Infantino’s big projects during his campaign to take over from Sepp Blatter.
It is unclear how the additional places will be divided up between different continents.
Fifa have not yet decided the host nation for the 2026 World Cup as yet.
