Keeper Joe Lewis today claimed the Dons’ proud Euro history can inspire their group stages bid.
The Dons are the only Scottish team left in the Europa League and face Maribor in the third qualifying round.
Former England squad keeper Lewis is a realist and knows the Reds will never repeat the Euro glory of the 1980s.
Under Sir Alex Ferguson the Reds won the European Cup Winners’ Cup and Super Cup in 1983.
But Lewis insisted the Gothenburg Greats can fuel the fight to reach the groups.
He said: “The European history of Aberdeen inspires the players.
“You look at the club badge and see two stars above it and you know Aberdeen are a big, proper club.
“With the quality of players and the management here we are going some way to hopefully restoring that European pride for the club.
“The group stages are the target and we have to aim high. Now the next round is another step towards getting to where we want to be.”
