Rangers should either move for Derek McInnes this week or make a statement he is not on their short list.
It needs to be cleared up as soon as possible for the benefit of Aberdeen, McInnes and Scottish football.
It is a ridiculous amount of speculation the Dons manager has had to work under and his players have had to cope with.
Speculation is not going away and is coming more forcefully than ever.
I thought it would have died when McInnes made the statement recently to quash the rumours about Rangers, but it is back with a vengeance.
The latest within Ibrox is that there will be some news coming and at least one way or another it will finally end the speculation.
If McInnes were to leave it would be a real blow as he has done a fantastic job at Pittodrie. He has put together a squad of players that has been successful and entertained the fans.
However McInnes is an ambitious, young manager and when you do well at a club like Aberdeen you attract attention from other clubs.
The board would be disappointed to lose their manager after the rebuilding process in the summer funds were made available to him to restructure the squad.
Whether the speculation on McInnes’ future has had an adverse effect on performance is difficult to say.
However it has certainly not helped their situation.
It has not allowed the managers and players to get on with the job in hand without having this cloud of speculation and having to face the same questions over and over again.
Rangers cannot allow the situation to drag on longer as it then makes the Ibrox board look like they don’t know what they are doing.
Ultimately the double header was a chance for that new look Dons to prove they are still second best force in Scotland. Now there are big question marks over that following the two defeats to Rangers.
There is a lot of improvement to be done for me to be convinced Aberdeen will finish runners-up this season.
The Dons had an opportunity to make a statement but Rangers put them to the sword and thoroughly their two wins. Second spot is still achievable for Aberdeen but there is a lot of work to be done.
