Aberdeen commercial director Rob Wicks says the Dons want to be involved in the “very bright future” of women’s sports.
On Thursday, the Evening Express revealed Pittodrie chiefs are in talks with Aberdeen Ladies to take over the running of their relegated Premier team.
The senior women’s side will play in the regionalised Division One North next term, having been in Scottish Women’s Premier League 1 just two seasons ago.
Wicks said: “It’s an important thing and we will make some formal announcements on that in due course.
“What I would say about that right now is that women’s sport is going through a fantastic period. There has been great success at international level across a broad range of women’s sports.
“Participation levels are up in a number of areas and it’s certainly an area where we think there is great potential.
“It ties in with our partners and the women’s game has a very bright future and Aberdeen wants to be part of that.”
It is understood the Aberdeen Ladies club will focus on age-group football only going forward, feeding the Dons-run adult side via a memorandum of agreement.
The senior side would fall under the Reds academy structure, with it being hoped the men’s club’s backing will ease the talent drain which sees the best female north-east players leave the area for wealthier sides or performance academies.
