Aberdeen’s rising stars of the future have defeated Spanish giants Atletico Madrid 3-1 in a tournament in Portugal.
The Dons’ 2005 squad triumphed over Atletico in the IberCup Gold Stage in Portugal.
Aberdeen 2005 coach, former Pittodrie player Derek Young, hailed the victory as a “proud day” for his team.
Young said: “It was a fantastic result and a well-deserved victory.
“We played fantastically well.
“We had a lot of chances. Atletico Madrid weren’t happy after the game and did not shake hands but we were dignified in what we did.
“It is a proud day for us as we managed to do fantastically well.”
The young Dons fought back from going a goal down to secure the victory.
Aberdeen set up the clash with the Spanish side having topped their group stage convincingly.
Young finally secured a victory over Atletico having lost 2-0 to the La Liga outfit in the Uefa Cup group stages in November 2007.
That star-studded Atletico team included Sergio Aguero (Manchester City), Diego Forlan (former Manchester United) and Luis Garcia (Champions League winner with Liverpool).
Young said: “I have a few demons with Atletico Madrid as they beat us 2-0 more than 10 years ago.
“It was good to get one over them as a coach.”
