Dons target Shaun Maloney has announced his retirement from playing and returned to Celtic to take charge of their under-20 team.
The 34-year-old was sought after by Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes during the summer after he left English Championship side Hull City.
A two-year contract to play at Pittodrie was almost signed by the 47-times capped Scotland international before he flagged up concerns about an injury.
The deal was put on hold before Dons boss McInnes conceded last week before the Europa League second leg with Apollon Limassol in Cyprus that the Reds would not be signing him.
Maloney, who was raised in Aberdeen, had two spells with Celtic as a player.
He was at Parkhead between 2000 and 2007 before leaving for Aston Villa. After a year he was back at Celtic before moving to Wigan Athletic in 2011.
Maloney then had a spell with Chicago Fire in America before returning to the UK with Hull City in 2015.
