Aberdeen have stepped up their fight to sign Stevie May by tabling an improved £300,000 bid for the striker.
The Reds had pitched in with a £250,000 offer to Preston North End for for the 24-year-old.
Sources indicate Preston aim to recoup around half of the £800,000 fee offloaded to Sheffield Wednesday for May in 2015.
The Dons hope an improved offer can force the issue to make the May the fourth signing of the summer.
Aberdeen are also in the hunt for Scotland midfielder Shaun Maloney.
Maloney’s contract with Hull City is set to expire this week and the Championship side tabled a one-year contract extension.
