THE U.S National archives have released these incredible behind the scenes images taken in the White House in the hours following the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11.
With President George Bush in Florida, the government’s emergency response to the attacks in New York was coordinated by Vice President Dick Cheney and National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice.
Following the news of the attacks senior members of White House staff were moved to a secure bunker underneath the building’s East Wing.
The images were released following a Freedom of Information request by documentary producer Colette Neirouz Hanna.
The full series of images can be viewed on the National Archives official Flickr page.
