When Ross Minor was eight years old his mum decided she wanted a divorce. It’s an extremely common situation, but what happened when she approached his father was anything but.
Mark Minor shot his son through the right side of his head as he slept, before shooting and killing Ross’s brother Ryan, and eventually killing himself. The bullet passed through Ross’s head, out of his left temple, and into his left palm.
Ross lost his left eye, the sight in his right eye, and his sense of smell – but he lived. Now 17, he suffers with depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Here’s his Reddit Ask Me Anything.
On whether he felt any pain, and memories of his brother
“I was asleep when I was shot, so I didn’t feel any pain. I was in the hospital for about 5 weeks or so … I was more of a mama’s boy, while Ryan liked to hang out with dad.”
On his dad’s reason
“My dad did leave several suicide notes, but I have yet to read them.
“I think I will read them one day, but not any time soon.
“I’m not nearly as angry as I used to be. I’ve pretty much accepted it for what it is.”
On his plans for the future
“I want to be a musician, a motivational speaker, and a programmer for sure.”
On how his mum coped
“For a while, mom struggled with extreme depression. Now she is engaged and doing fantastic.”
On what he sees
“I sort of see my own mind. Since I used to be able to see, I know what colours look like. Because of that I sort of see what I picture in my mind, if that makes sense.”
On gun control
“I believe that guns should have extremely strict restrictions, multiple screenings, etc.”
“When I dream, it’s more of just blurry colours. I don’t usually dream often, so it’s not something I really care about.”
On whether his other senses are heightened
“Yes they are, especially my hearing. I mostly rely on my sense of touch and hearing.”
On whether his name is Matt Murdock
On how he reddits
“I have a program on my computer that reads the text on my screen.”
On his favourite memory from when he had sight
“Hmm, I was once in the Bahamas and I saw a young lady tanning topless, that was quite a sight!”
On his spare time
“I play video games. I’m the captain of the swim team. I play the drums, piano, guitar, and I sing. I like to read and do various extreme sports.”
On whether there’s a meaning or purpose behind what’s happened in his life
“At this moment in my life, I believe it’s just luck and chance and effects from my determination to make something of my life.”
On whether being blind helps or hinders him with women
“Most women are afraid to approach me because my blindness intimidates them.”
On his advice to other people struggling with depression
“Depression isn’t really something that’s dependent on how bad you have something, sometimes people just have it. I would say let people help you. We don’t think rationally when we’re depressed.”
