A POLL has shown that 68% believe the north of England should become part of Scotland.
The Evening Express asked the question online yesterday after a petition was relaunched to move the border as far south as Sheffield.
By 8am today 2,179 votes had been cast, with 1,472 in favour of the idea and 707 against it.
Around 27,000 people have signed the petition, with the new target changed from 15,000 to 35,000.
Other regional newspaper websites in the north of England have commissioned similar polls, returning similar results.
After 1,500 votes on the Manchester Evening News website, 72% were in favour of ditching England for “New Scotland”, following the General Election result.
In the Liverpool Echo poll, the desire to become Scottish was just higher, at 73%.
