Little Charlie Gard has been in the news again this past week, when once again the High Court was looking at the case.
but I was really pleased to hear this time there was a glimmer of hope for Charlie’s doting parents.
I don’t think any of us can really know what Charlie’s parents, Connie Yates and Chris Gard, are going through.
Yes, we can all sympathise and hope to say all the right things, but when it comes to the crunch none of us have walked in their shoes. I have so much admiration for Charlie’s mum and dad.
They have fought with everything they have to keep Charlie alive in the hope of finding someone, somewhere who could come up with a cure and would be willing to use it to give him a chance.
It also has to be appreciated that the doctors and specialists at Great Ormond Street also have Charlie’s best interests at heart and they certainly don’t want to see him suffer unnecessarily.
We’ve heard Donald Trump being extremely supportive as has the Pope, but are they just giving false hope?
There really isn’t much either of them can do on a practical basis.
For me, and probably everyone whose been following this sad case, it’s the news that a US doctor was being invited to examine little Charlie after a detailed discussion with the judge via a video link.
Even better was the news that the case was deferred until the US doctor could fly into London.
This eminent neurologist has indicated there could be anywhere between a 10% and 56% chance of recovery.
This must have been like music to mum and dad’s ears.
At least now they have a glimmer of hope and a reprieve for a wee while longer.
Life is so precious and my hopes and prayers is that, whatever happens, Charlie’s parents will know they did the very best they could for him.
