Woman arrested after pensioner’s handbag stolen in north-east town

A woman has been arrested after a handbag was allegedly stolen from an elderly woman in the north-east.

Police were called after receiving reports that an 80-year-old woman had had her handbag stolen on Broad Street in Peterhead at 4pm yesterday.

A 24-year-old woman has been arrested by officers, said a Police Scotland spokeswoman.

Members of the public were thanked for their help by officers.

Sergeant James Callander said: “Thankfully the woman was not injured following this incident and the handbag has been recovered. However, she has naturally been left extremely shaken.

“I would like to thank members of the public who were in the area at the time and who assisted the victim and the police.

“Inquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is urged to contact police on 101 using ref. no 2221 of 5 December or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 to remain anonymous.”
