Dozens of couples could be unable to claim back deposits for weddings booked at a recently bankrupt hotel – because their cash was used to keep the business afloat.
People planning to tie the knot at Elgin’s Mansion House Hotel each paid £650 to secure the venue.
But, with the hotel last month going bust, some who booked between October and March have been advised their money will not be returned.
One couple received a letter telling them “it would appear that the deposit may have been used in other business transactions”.
Accountant in Bankruptcy, which is Scotland’s insolvency service, said that appeals would be considered on a “case by case” basis but dozens would be affected.
The group said it would not be able to provide exact figures until people started to submit claims.
