The wedding of the year may be taking place in Windsor – but north-east couples are marking their own match of the day.
Couples in the area will have no excuse to forget their anniversary – as it falls on the same day as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s.
Among those celebrating their big day today is Jordan Thomson, 25, and Melanie Adams, 22, who live in Woodside.
The happy couple, who chose the city’s Northern Hotel to tie the knot in, met eight years ago and have gone from strength to strength since.
They were accompanied on their big day by their three children Harley, five, Olivia, four, and Mirren, one.
Jordan said: “We met at George’s Convenience Store in Torry when we were both teenagers.
“I saw her and pretty much instantly knew that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her.
“We got engaged three years ago on Christmas Eve. It wasn’t planned for it to be such a long engagement – it just ended up happening that way.”
Although the couple say they picked their wedding date before Harry and Meghan, they are making the most of the situation.
“We joke that they stole our date,” Jordan added. We felt a bit put out when we first found out about it, but we decided that when we got announced after the ceremony, we’d come in wearing Harry and Meghan masks.
“The wedding isn’t anything like the scale of Harry and Meghan’s – the ceremony was for close friends and family only and then we’ll be having a bigger party for the reception. Harley is my page boy and Olivia and Mirren are flower girls.
“It hasn’t really sunk in yet.”
Another happy couple sharing their date with royalty is Ria Cable, 31, and Mark Petrie, 34.
Ria, who owns beauty salon Karisa in Inverurie, said: “We met through a family friend about 10 years ago.
“We got engaged in February 2017 when we went travelling for several weeks in south-east Asia.
“In Singapore he proposed.
“The wedding was only booked at the beginning of this year in January. We had no idea that we had picked the same day as Harry and Meghan – it was a complete coincidence.
“We have had quite a few laughs about it though, especially with all the countdowns on the TV for the royal wedding – there’s no way we’ll be forgetting the date.”
The pair have chosen the Marcliffe and Ria said: “We’re having quite a low-key wedding. We just wanted to have the people that mean the most to us there.”
Fiona Kerr, 27, and Colin MacPherson, 31, are also walking down the aisle today at Ferryhill Parish Church.
Fiona, a community nurse, said: “We got engaged in November 2016 during a walk on Elie Beach in Fife and we’ve had this date picked out since that December, so we definitely got there first.
“People have definitely pointed it out to us and we’ve had a few jokes about it. We’re very excited for the day and it’s quite exciting to be sharing it with royalty.”
