An Aberdeen roller derby group is hoping to win a slice of a £15,000 pot to buy some new equipment.
Granite City Roller Derby is one of the many groups hoping to snag its share of £15,000 from this year’s CommunitEE Chest.
Laura Fairley, one of the coaches for the group, said: “This year we are celebrating our 10-year anniversary and it’s a special one for us.
“We’re hoping to put the money towards new equipment – we provide new skates and protection free of charge to new skaters.
“It’s to make it more accessible to people who are interested in starting and can be put off by the costs.
“One of the other things we’re looking to do is put the money towards first aid courses.”
The group started by skating in the Toys R Us car park at Berryden, and has gone on to compete in the British Roller Derby Championships in Stoke-On-Trent.
Laura said: “The starter package could sometimes cost up to £120 and we want to make skating as accessible as possible.”
Roller derby is a fast-paced and full-contact indoor sport played by teams on quad roller skates. The group is also aiming to celebrate its milestone anniversary with a special event on October 27.
To be in with a chance of landing a share of the £15,000 prize money, all organisations who are registered must collect more than 100 tokens from the Evening Express.
Tokens can be collected daily up until October 6.
