Mountain rescue teams were called to search for two men reported missing in the Cairngorms.

The hillwalkers had set off yesterday from Glen Muick near Ballater and were supposed to return by 5pm.

Family members alerted the emergency services at 7pm that they were overdue.

A crew of 31 and a coastguard helicopter was sent to search for the men.

Four mountain rescue teams – including Aberdeen, Tayside, Braemar and Police Scotland – took part in the search.

They were traced safe and well at 4.30am and were walked back by the rescue team this morning.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “They were traced safe and well in an unexpected location towards Tayside.

“It is believed they were lost.”
