A former academy could be earmarked for demolition despite a community bid to buy the building.
The future of the old Mearns Academy site is expected to be decided by Aberdeenshire Council’s policy and resources committee this week.
In 2014 the school was closed and has remained disused since.
The local authority was keen to sell the land for development.
But Laurencekirk Development Trust wanted to bid to retain it as a community asset and had submitted a business case for the site.
An initial bid was rejected and the group asked to submit a more detailed case.
The new proposal will be discussed at the committee’s meeting on Thursday.
But councillors are also being asked to discuss tender contracts for the demolition of the school.
Despite this, trust chairman Mike Robson remains optimistic that the bid will be successful. He said: “We are still pressing forward and talking to potential backers at the moment.
“We are having a meeting tomorrow to work on the plans.”
