A row has broken out over a decision to close two swimming pools.
Aberdeen South MP Callum McCaig and Aberdeen South and North Kincardine MSP Maureen Watt have written a joint letter to Aberdeen City Council’s chief executive, Angela Scott.
They are demanding answers on the planned closure of Hazlehead and Kincorth swimming pools in August. As revealed in Saturday’s Evening Express, Sport Aberdeen announced the pools were to shut after the school holidays.
The move came after the council slashed the sporting body’s funding by £405,000 earlier this year.
A petition to keep the facilities open has gathered hundreds of signatures.
However, the city’s finance boss Councillor Willie Young has questioned why the SNP politicians want answers from the local authority over an Aberdeen Sport move.
Ms Watt said she was responding on behalf of concerned constituents.
She added: “The city council must accept their responsibility for this decision, as it is the administration themselves who fund Sport Aberdeen.”
Cllr Willie Young said: “I find it extraordinary coming from Callum McCaig and Maureen Watt because their own councillors on February 25 voted for a £405,000 reduction in funding to Sport Aberdeen.
“The best thing that Callum McCaig and Maureen Watt could do is ask their own SNP councillors why they voted for that reduction to funding.
“Sport Aberdeen has their own board and they took that decision.
“That decision was not taken by councillors.”
