North East region MSP Tom Mason asked his Scottish parliamentary colleagues to support the university in its future endeavours.
He said: “Aberdeen’s universities have a long tradition of academic excellence along with a reputation for welcoming students from all over the world.
“It is gratifying to see Aberdeen University’s commitment recognised in this way and I hope it will give the other shortlisted UK institutions a run for their money.”
Principal Professor George Boyne called the award “a testament to the efforts of our staff and students”.
Mr Mason’s motion has asked to congratulate the university on its award.
