POLICE are hunting ‘despicable’ vandals who knocked over gravestones at a North-east cemetery.
Police in Peterhead have appealed for witnesses after five headstones were removed from their bases at Balmoor Cemetery in the town.
The vandalism is thought to have happened between around 3pm on Friday, December 4, and 8am on Monday, December 7.
The gravestones were not damaged but it is estimated that it will cost a low four-figure sum of money for the stones to be replaced.
Sergeant Graeme Cupples said: “We are treating this as a deliberate and despicable act of vandalism.
“Some of the gravestones are very old but regardless of that they mark the resting places of family members and loved ones.
“We would appeal to anyone in the area who may have witnessed any suspicious behaviour or seen anything unusual to contact us on 101 or if you wish to remain anonymous via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
