NEW research has shown that two of the region’s largest communities have the “dubious” honour of being further from the British rail network than any other town.
Peterhead and Fraserburgh are now more remote than any other major settlement following the opening of the new Borders Railway this week.
The route is the longest stretch of track built in more than a century, and railway author David Spaven said the scheme has stripped Hawick and Galashiels of their unwanted status of being the most remote settlements from the rail network.
He said: “My new research indicates that when the Borders Railway opens, this dubious accolade will shift to Fraserburgh, 40 miles from the nearest station, and Peterhead, 30 miles from the nearest station.”
He added that he hoped the research would help reinforce the case for reopening the Buchan and Formartine railway line.
Earlier this year Democratic Independent and Green Group councillors Martin Ford and Paul Johnston called for the line to be reinstated as far as Ellon.
