Olympian Hannah Miley is coming home to open a Christmas ice rink.

The Inverurie-born swimmer has signed up to officially open her home town’s ice rink on December 1.

Run by the We Are Inverurie organisation, the group is delighted to have the Commonwealth Games champion signed up.

Discover Christmas – Inverurie is due to bring festive fun to the north-east town.

It gets under way on Sunday with a parade and the switch on of the Christmas lights.

Bid manager at We Are Inverurie Derek Ritchie said: “We’re delighted that Hannah will be with us on December 1 and helping everyone enjoy the treats that the town has to offer in the lead up to Christmas.

“This is the first year Inverurie has had an ice rink in the town as part of its Christmas celebrations.

“Inverurie Events Team and We Are Inverurie have been working flat out to make sure this year’s Christmas celebrations are fun for everyone to enjoy.”

Hannah, who has represented Great Britain at three Olympic and Commonwealth Games, trained in the town in the early part of her sporting career.

As the guest of honour, the Olympian will open the ice rink at 10.30am and introduce a group of young figure skaters aged 7-14, who regularly compete at a national level.

Hannah said: “I’m really looking forward to this event.

“Inverurie has always been my home and to celebrate Christmas with the opening of the ice rink is a huge honour. I am excited to meet everyone.”

The rink will be in a marquee to the rear of the town hall.
