A pensioners’ group transformed their meeting place with some help from the Evening Express.
The James Tyrell Centre in Mastrick is a group for elderly, lonely and socially isolated members of the community.
Pensioners at the centre had been desperate to raise money to renovate their beloved meeting place several years ago.
They managed to make their £30,000 target through fundraising but in 2012 they scooped £1,000 in the CommunitEE Chest giveaway in order to buy new furnishings and cushions for the centre.
The centre provides a place for older people to make friends and spend some quality time together.
Members can have a chat over tea and toast, enjoy entertainment and head out on day trips.
The group meets within Mastrick Parish Church in Aberdeen four days a week and helps around 50 people weekly.
Jane Wilson, who has been supervisor of the group for the past six years, said: “We needed a large sum of money so that went towards it. The whole building was upgraded.”
Jane said that the giveaway is a great idea and added: “With cutbacks it is good to get any help you can.”
The group is also hoping to bag some cash in this year’s giveaway in order to replace their chairs which have become tired with new ones.
Not-for-profit groups have registered to collect CommunitEE Chest tokens to be in with a chance of grabbing a slice of a £10,000 fund.
All you have to do to enter is fill out the registration form and work together to collect the tokens available in the Evening Express.
Groups with the most tokens by the end of 2016 will walk away with a cash amount of between £500 and £2,000.
You can also register your group online at www.eveningexpress.co.uk.
There are three categories depending on the number of members in your community group.
A total of 10 groups with 30 members or fewer will each scoop £500.
Three groups with between 31 and 61 members are in line for £1,000 each.
And one group with more than 61 members will be handed a whopping £2,000.
