A supermarket giant has handed a north-east charity a cash boost to build a new playpark.
Morrisons donated £82,092 to the ARCHIE Foundation, which supports sick children at Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital, for the new area.
Handed down as part of the supermarket’s charitable arm – the Morrisons Foundation – the cash will be used to revamp the former park, which was closed after falling into a state of disrepair.
Bosses at the charity hope the playpark will allow kids to play and be active, regardless of any disabilities or ailments they may have, while also providing respite between medical treatments.
ARCHIE aims to provide extra support to the patients and staff at the children’s hospital, helping to fund advanced training and equipment, as well as making the hospital environment more inviting and less intimidating for the children.

David Wood, the chief executive of the ARCHIE Foundation, was thrilled with the strides which have been made to open the park.
He said: “All children should have play opportunities available to them. However, the old play area on the grounds of the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital was closed and in need of refurbishment and repair. We were absolutely delighted when the Morrisons Foundation provided the funds to install specialist play equipment.
“We have been able to create a wonderfully inclusive and enhanced outdoor play area.
“The age-appropriate, inclusive and popular play equipment will assist in reducing stress levels for both patients and their siblings during a visit to hospital or a long stay. We really can’t thank Morrisons enough for their very generous support.”
Sarah-Jane Booth, the community champion from the local Morrisons branch, presented the donation to the charity.
She said: “We are over the moon to be able to support such a great local charity. I’m really proud that the foundation has been able to provide a new play area to the hospital, which I’m sure will make a difference to children there for a long time to come.”
It is hoped construction for the new area will start in the spring, after the completion of other works to create a car park in front of the hospital.
The work on the new playpark is expected to be completed in the summer.
