ONE week before the new school term begins there remains 160 vacant teacher posts in North-east schools, the Evening Express can reveal today.
Nine primary school head teachers are still needed in Aberdeen – the highest number in Scotland – among 60 vacancies overall.
There are currently 34 primary and 16 secondary teachers needed as well as one secondary school headteacher.
Aberdeenshire Council has the highest number of teaching vacancies in Scotland at 100 – 70 primary teachers, 23 secondary, six primary headteachers and one secondary head.
Craig Clement, head of education for resources and performance at Aberdeenshire Council, said: “From targeted advertising, links to recruitment specialists to providing advice on housing – we are making concerted efforts to recruit more teaching staff and attract people to live and work in Aberdeenshire.”
Aberdeen City Council’s convener of education and children’s services committee, Councillor Angela Taylor, said: “Recruitment is ongoing under a system which allows candidates to be interviewed once for various posts.”
