A north-east bacon enthusiast is looking to smoke out the competition in a popular TV food programme.
Mark Reynolds, who runs the Piggery-Smokery, in Alford, is poised to compete in the new BBC 2 series Top of the Shop with Tom Kerridge.
The show puts up-and-coming amateur food producers from across Britain in a real shop in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales to sell their wares.
In episode five, airing tonight, the show will focus on meat producers fighting it out for one place in the final.
Mark, a 52-year-old former oil worker from the Aberdeenshire village, worked for 27 years as a pipeline operation engineer before being made redundant prompted him to follow his dream of meat production.
He said: “We found out about the show through a customer who messaged us about it and next thing we knew we had a TV crew stop by and interview me.
“I have always been interested in food and I was fed up with the quality in supermarkets. I never really knew what went into bacon and decided to give it a try.
“I brought some into work and I suddenly had people asking for more.
“The show was a really great experience but also exhausting. I am looking forward to seeing it come on the TV and seeing where it takes Piggery-Smokery.”
Mark went to the Italian Culinary Institute in Calabria two years ago to complete a course on Italian charcuterie.
Piggery-Smokery calls itself a “dedicated creator of bacon products” with Mark preparing and curing the delicious meat from his home in a smoking shed at the bottom of the garden.
The series celebrates the craft of “making delicious things” from smoking meat to handmade cheeses and chocolates, and from chutneys to preserves.
Food enthusiasts can’t get enough of food created with natural ingredients, bold flavours and rediscovered traditional methods.
At the end of the series, in the eighth and final show, the shop will be filled with the seven winning products from the seven different categories.
The judges will ask the locals to help them one last time to decide which producer and product is the best overall.
