Some of the top Nordic Noir writers are heading for Aberdeen – including Sweden’s “Queen of Crime”.
Kristina Ohlsson – author of the popular Fredrika Bergman novels – is one of the Scandinavian novelists announced for the Granite Noir crime writing festival.
She will be joined by Norway’s Gunnar Staalesan, who writes the Varg Veum books, and Denmark’s Thomas Rydahl, whose debut novel The Hermit won the Glass Key Award – whose previous winners include Jo Nesbo and Stieg Larrson.
They will join top Scottish Tartan Noir writers such as Christopher Brookmyre, Denise Mina and the North-east’s own Stuart MacBride for the festival. It will see more than 20 events held from Friday, February 24, to Sunday, February 26.
Aberdeen Performing Arts chief executive Jane Spiers said: “We’re delighted to be bringing masters of Nordic Noir genre to Aberdeen for Granite Noir. Over three days we’ll pay homage to the wealth of talent from Scotland and Scandinavia, delving into the Northern Phenomenon and what makes the genre so compelling.”
The full programme has been unveiled for the festival, organised by APA, Belmont Filmhouse, Aberdeen City Library and Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Archives.
The events are designed for readers and writers alike. They will range from workshops and panels hosted by star authors to film screenings and exhibitions.
Topics up for discussion and debate range from how novels are planned to whether evil exists.
There will also be family-friendly events for “Little Criminals” a “poisoned” high tea and the chance to solve a mystery from Aberdeen’s past and a special edition of A Play, A Pie And A Pint at the Lemon Tree.
Jane said: “Our programme is designed to cater for crime novel enthusiasts right down the line to those just discovering noir.
“We hope people approach the festival programme with a spirit of adventure – come along to see your favourite authors in action and stick around to discover something new and exciting.”
