Police were today hunting a would-be robber who targeted an Aberdeen newsagent with a knife.
The incident, which happened at McColl’s on Hayton Road, has shocked residents and businesses in the area.
Staff said the man pulled the weapon on a worker before demanding they open the shop’s safe.
A member of staff activated the panic alarm, prompting the man to walk out of the shop before jumping on a bicycle and cycling off.
The attempted robbery happened about 10.55am on Saturday.
Detective Constable Nicky Clark said: “Thankfully no one was hurt in this incident, and the perpetrator was unsuccessful in obtaining any property.
“We continue to follow positive lines of inquiry and appeal to anyone with information to contact police on 101 providing reference number PS20181006-1489 or alternatively call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 if you would prefer to remain anonymous.”
Councillor Ross Grant, who represents the Tillydrone area, said: “I’m glad that nobody was hurt and that the perpetrator did not get away with anything.
“It’s crucial that anyone with any information helps the police with their inquiries.”
Businesses also expressed concern about the incident.
Kerry O’Driscoll, manager at nearby Ray’s fish and chips takeaway, said: “I was shocked when I found out what had happened. It’s not the first time something like this has happened but it has been quiet for a while.
“It often goes quiet for a time and then something will happen, and then it will be quiet.
“It is definitely concerning for us.
“We want to keep the area safe and we are worried that something could happen here.
“I also worry for the people around the area in case something like this happens again.”
Mohammad Alam, owner of the Indian restaurant Qismat 2 on Hayton Road, added: “We are very concerned and were really shocked when we learned about what had happened in broad daylight.
“We close late at night at 11pm so we’re very worried that something like this will happen again.
“I have been running the restaurant for four years now and I have never seen anything like this happening before.”
