Plans have formally been lodged for the construction of a major new school and community campus.
Inverurie Community Campus will replace the current Inverurie Academy and be constructed on the grounds of the current building.
It will include 73 classroom/lab spaces, four learning plazas, six staff work space hubs, a conference/meeting suite and a large dining hall and kitchen.
Community space at the development would include a four-court games hall, two gymnasiums, a dance studio and a fitness studio.
It would also feature a six-lane pool, training pool, hydrotherapy pool and warm water pool.
A community/youth cafe and resource space also form part of the plans, as well as an all-weather pitch, seven-a-side pitch and multi-use games area.
Also included in the £54 million complex will be St Andrew’s School, which caters for youngsters with additional support needs.
St Andrew’s will feature an enclosed courtyard designed to provide a “more concentrated sensory experience” with a variety of surfaces and materials.
Planning documents state: “The phasing of the build dictates the new campus building is located on the existing playing fields.
“This allows the academy, community centre and pool to remain operational while the new building is constructed. This puts the campus at the highest point of the site and opens up the north of the site for green space and car parking.”
The documents also state: “The design concept is based on maximising natural daylight to classrooms by locating them around the perimeter of the building.
“Internal spaces support flexible learning and are lit using three large atriums. These atriums form key social spaces in the new campus with three distinct functions – a dining hall, a performance space and an amphitheatre.”
Construction is planned in three phases, the first of which is hoped to begin in 2018.
Phase one would see a car park built on Victoria Park – the playing field on Westfield Road – to serve the existing academy.
The school’s existing playing fields would be cleared and building structure works commence.
Phase two would see the Inverurie Campus building completed and the final phase would see the old building demolished and parking and landscaping works finished.
