A NEW “state-of-the-art” school could be built on the grounds of an academy gutted by fire.
Council officers have recommended that a new Stoneywood School be built at the former Bankhead Academy site in Bucksburn.
Bankhead Academy was seriously damaged when a fire ripped through the building in 2012.
The building was demolished later that year but the site has lain empty since.
Following consultation with the public and pupils, officers at Aberdeen City Council have now recommended that a new Stoneywood School be built where Bankhead Academy used to stand.
If approved by Tuesday’s education and children’s services committee, and planning, it’s hoped the new school could be open by August 2017 “or as soon as possible thereafter”.
Aberdeen Donside SNP MSP Mark McDonald said he welcomed the council’s recommendation.
He added: “I think it’s the sensible choice for the options that were available.”
