Councillors have unanimously backed a new sports strategy for the city.
The Aberdeen Sports Facilities Strategy outlines potential sports opportunities which could be delivered across the city.
As reported in the Evening Express, a new snowsports centre with facilities fit for Olympians has been put forward as an “aspiration” under the plan.
Aberdeen Snowsports Centre manages the city’s artificial ski slope in Garthdee but the facility is aging and a consultation has identified the slope is perceived to be too short.
The long-term aspiration is to develop a new site with facilities to suit beginners to GB team athletes.
The strategy, which has been created by the Aberdeen Active Partnership, also outlines developing a dedicated gymnastics facility at Alex Collie Sports Centre as an “immediate priority” within the first 18 months of the strategy. Plans to modernise the Beach Leisure Centre and to refurbish Westburn Tennis Centre could be taken forward between year two and five.
Sport Aberdeen managing director Alistair Robertson said: “I think it’s a realistic plan and we’re very focused on how we deliver that.”
