Man charged over alleged use of firearm on North Sea oil platform

A 50-year-old man has been charged with alleged firearms licensing offences after a gun was allegedly used to light a gas flare on a North Sea platform.

The incident took place on Total’s Elgin platform on Boxing Day.

Police Scotland said inquiries are continuing and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

French company Total said the inquiry follows an operation to relight the flare on the platform, around 150 miles east of Aberdeen, with a modified shotgun that fires magnesium cartridges.
