ABERDEENSHIRE has the lowest rate of people being sent to prison in Scotland, new figures show.
The Scottish Government figures show that Aberdeenshire had an incarceration rate of 49 people per 100,000 – the lowest in the country and less than a third of the Scottish average of 179.
Dundee had the highest rate in Scotland, with 322 per 100,000, compared to 171 in Aberdeen, 74 in Angus and 72 in Moray.
The report states: “There is a strong correlation between imprisonment rates and area deprivation.”
Scotland has a slightly lower incarceration rate than England and Wales, but the UK has higher rates of people being sent to prison than most other European countries.
