Aberdeen homeless charity to receive government funding for new project

Nicola Sturgeon

An Aberdeen charity has welcomed an announcement from the First Minister that additional funds have been pledged to tackle rough sleeping.

Nicola Sturgeon announced the Government’s intention to deliver extra funding to Aberdeen Cyrenians – although the sum has yet to be revealed.

The money would partially go towards delivering a new assertive outreach service within Aberdeen.

The charity will work in collaboration with Aberdeen City Council to deliver the new initiative.

Aberdeen Cyrenians chief executive Mike Burns said: “This announcement means that effective support will be available to those rough sleeping to identify practical support and provide sustainable solutions with access to accommodation.

“As the cold weather bites, it is critical that we support as many people as we can who find themselves sleeping rough and on the streets. Aberdeen Cyrenians have also recently launched their Christmas and Beyond appeal which allows us to open our services for longer over the festive period.

“Thanks to the generosity of the Aberdeen people we have been able to do so in previous years.”
